Located in St. Paul, Minnesota, Urban Organics is working to reinvigorate the food system one meal at a time, for the health of both people and the environment. As a sustainable farm, Urban Organic strives to not only to grow healthy food, but to create new business opportunities that strengthen local communities as well. Revitalizing a derelict brewery facility, the company turned a long-vacant building into a sustainability-focused indoor vertical farm growing USDA certified, 100% organic produce.
Urban Organics farms with aquaponics, where fish and plants help each other grow. The company uses its aquaponics operation to grow arctic char and vegetables such as parsley, chard, kale, and cilantro. Urban Organics provides these types of leafy greens to local grocers and restaurants. The farm offers 9 different salad blends as well as occasional proprietary blends to local business as well.
The company aims to leave less of an imprint on the environment by providing indoor farms that use no pesticides that leach into local watersheds, use all LED lights for its growing system, and use a RAS (recirculating aquaculture system) which needs 5% less water than that used in conventional farming operations. Additionally, Urban Organics is interested in pushing policy forward for aquaculture when it comes to humane treatment certifications, organic options, and defining all types of aquaculture facilities. The company also believes in being a part of the movement to educate the public in the options of food they have and how with each decision, any individual can begin to make a difference in how fish are farmed in relation to the environment. Urban Organics recognizes that the healthier its fish are, the healthier the plants are that it can provide to urban areas all-year long.
