Greene Prairie Aquafarm

Greene Prairie Aquafarm is an inland shrimp farm located in Alabama, about 150 miles from the Gulf coast. The farm was formed in 2001 to produce the saltwater shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei in brackish water pumped from an underground aquifer. The brackish water has been used for the past 20 years in the production of channel catfish, but the Greene Prairie Aquafarm is the first in Alabama dedicated to shrimp. The farm comprises 23 earthen ponds containing a total of 78 surface acres of water, and hosts two solar houses where young shrimp can be nursed and acclimated to the low-salinity water.

Greene Prairie Aquafarm is owned by H. R. (Rud) Schmittou and David Teichert-Coddington. Rud and David were colleagues at Auburn University, AL, where they worked with the Department of Fisheries and Allied Aquacultures and the International Center for Aquaculture and Aquatic Environments. Rud was a Professor Emeritus at Auburn University and is now retired. David manages the farm where he lives with his family.
