FAQ's for FishChoice Users

Free Registration

  • In order to obtain the names of suppliers and to use the online contact form, the website requires a simple registration process. This registration also aids FishChoice to make sure we have the righty types of products, from the right types of companies, and to develop content that is interesting and relevant to our users. We also want to make sure that if buyers who use the website have any trouble contacting the suppliers, we have the information ready at our disposal to help if needed.

Finding Seafood:

  • Seafood Directory: Start by going to the "SEAFOOD Products" tab. All of the products are listed in the left-hand margin of the page, grouped by large categories (ex. Salmon, Pink; Crab, Snow), and using the species common name. The number of associated products for each species is listed next to each species in parenthesis. Clicking on the species generates a full browse list of all products in that category. Alternatively, you can enter the name of a product or company in the "SEARCH FishChoice" field under the green tabs at the top of every page. Because there are so many names for seafood products, this search may or may not yield the results you are looking for. If you don't find products using the 'search' function, we encourage you to double check the seafood directory and by common name.

  • Sorting Products: There are multiple ways to sort products on FishChoice.com. There is a drop down menu above the browse list (Sort By”) as well as functionality that allows you to scroll over each column header and sort by that column. The options available to sort products includes: product name, product origin, wild or farmed, gear/farm type, supplier name, supplier location, supplier's industry activity, minimum order, availability of overnight delivery, and seafood ratings and certifications.

  • Regional Products: Products can also be identified by a "Regional Search." This function allows you to identify a specific regional location first and then look at all the products within that region. The same sort functions are available, and in regions with multiple states/provinces you can also sort by state.

  • Finding Product Details: Once you have found a product you want more information about, you can either click on the product name, or click on the green "Product Detail" button on the far right next to each product listing. This will take you to the product listing page that includes much more detail including the scientific species name, fresh/frozen availability; fresh/frozen formats, delivery information, conservation notes about the product if relevant, and additional notes about the supplier and/or product provided by the supplier.

Contacting Suppliers:

  • Online: Once you have found a product that you want more information you can express your interest directly to the supplier from the FishChoice website. To contact the supplier use the orange Contact Supplier button on the far right of the product listing on the browse list or similarly on the right side of the product detail page. Clicking on the button opens up an online form with your name and email you provided when registering for FishChoice preloaded and a blank field for you to ask any questions you may have. Click "Send" and this form is sent directly to the supplier in just a few seconds, alerts them to your interest, and they will follow-up with you. We recommend you include your phone number if you want an immediate reply.

  • Forward Product Details: If you do not buy products directly, want to send information to your distributor, or want to let someone else know about a product, you can forward the product detail page directly from the website. Under the orange 'contact supplier' button on each product detail page is a link to "Forward Product Details." This link opens an online form, with the name and email you provided when registering for FishChoice and fields to enter the email address of who you are sending the product detail page to and a blank field to include your message. For example, if you are a chef or restaurant that uses a distributor, finding products on FishChoice.com and sending those details to the distributor to then procure the product is a simple and efficient way to source sustainable seafood.

  • Offline: Each product detail page includes the name of the contact for the supplier, their address, phone number, and website. Remember when calling a supplier you found on FishChoice please tell them where you found them.

Seafood not Found on FishChoice / Requesting Seafood

  • Not all seafood that is bought and sold has been evaluated for it's sustainability. Only seafood that has a favorable seafood rating or seafood certification by one or more of our partner organizations will be listed on FishChoice.com. These ratings and certifications change constantly and our directory includes the most up to date information. Additionally, FishChoice is a growing database and may not have a product that you are looking for because it may not be rated or certified by one of our partner organizations or we are working on finding suppliers for the sustainable product to get them listed. If you want to request a product that you can't find on FishChoice, please use the "Request Product Search" form and we will respond shortly.
