WhyWild, Trout Unlimited's Salmon Marketplace Outreach Program

WhyWild is Trout Unlimited’s salmon marketplace outreach program which seeks to answer the often confusing question: Why eat wild salmon?

Using salmon recipe cards, dinners, promotions and other food-related initiatives, the WhyWild Program reconnects consumers to the wild rivers and streams that our wild salmon come from and the basic ingredients that wild salmon need to be healthy and productive (eg, clean water, free-flowing rivers, large woody debris).  WhyWild also engages the salmon marketplace in on-the-ground salmon conservation work throughout the West Coast, helping turn wild salmon consumers into wild salmon advocates.

One of the ways that WhyWild encourages salmon consumers to take action is to “vote with your fork” for wild salmon.  While counterintuitive, eating wild salmon is perhaps one of the most effective ways we can save wild salmon.  By eating wild salmon from sustainable sources, we are investing our dollars in our wild salmon fisheries and showing that wild salmon is a food source that we value.  When something has value, people will work to protect it.

One of WhyWild’s most urgent campaigns today is the Savor Bristol Bay campaign, consisting of a community of salmon consumers, chefs, retailers, and suppliers around the country working together to help protect our nation’s last great wild salmon fishery:  Bristol Bay, Alaska against the threat of the proposed Pebble Mine development.  You can do your part and help us Savor Bristol Bay by sourcing wild Bristol Bay salmon.  See below for  a list of  some Bristol Bay salmon suppliers listed on FishChoice:
