The Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch Program

 

The Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch Program is designed to conduct intensive research on aquatic species and help consumers navigate the issues of sustainable seafood. They provide downloadable seafood guides that let you know just what to eat and what to avoid as well as an iPhone application that brings the same information to your iPhone.  Seafood Watch also works with partner restaurants to help them source more sustainable products.

Blue Ocean Institute

 

Blue Ocean Institute (BOI) was created by MacArthur Prize-winning scientist/author Dr. Carl Safina and Mercédès Lee to bring about awareness of the oceans and to encourage people to bond with them. Visit BOI's website to find seafood guides, a sushi specific guide, mercury information and information about FishPhone, a service that allows you to text message to find out if a seafood product is sustainable.

FishWise

 

FishWise works with grocery retailers to help them understand seafood sustainability. FishWise helps the retailers with many different programs such as setting up a labeling program for seafood sustainability, sourcing better products, training staff to answer questions and they are on-call to assist each retailer with questions regarding their seafood. You can learn more about the FishWise program at their website as well as where you can find a store that is “FishWise.”

New England Aquarium

 

The New England Aquarium’s sustainable seafood initiative works with all sectors to bring change to the seafood industry and the products that consumers have to choose from. They have a great page on their website called, “Be an Ocean-Friendly Seafood Shopper.” You will find a list of ocean friendly choices, recipes and an “Ocean Friendly Seafood Shopper Guide.”

SeaChoice

 

SeaChoice is a coalition of leading Canadian conservation organizations working together to raise public awareness of the threats to oceans and the solutions that sustainable fisheries offer. On their website you can find a list of seafood species ranked for sustainability, recipes and information about the organizations in the coalition.

FishWatch

 

Most seafood certification and ratings programs for U.S. fisheries are based on scientific data and monitoring provided by the federal government through NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), also known as NOAA Fisheries. FishWatch.gov, a NOAA-sponsored website, helps answer consumer questions about seafood and sustainability.

Food Alliance

 

Food Alliance Certification for farmed shellfish covers clams, mussels, geoducks, and oysters species. The criteria for certification include both social and environmental responsibility standards which include: that no antibiotics are used, no GMO breeds are used, there is demonstrated fish and wildlife habitat conservation, and safe and fair working conditions are addressed.

The Marine Stewardship Council

 

The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is the world's leading certification and ecolabelling program for sustainable seafood. The MSC works tirelessly to bring new fisheries into certification and to make sure that the seafood supply chain can ensure the MSC products are authentic.
