Since 1918, Seattle Fish Company has been committed to providing its customers with fresh, high quality seafood. When he was just 16, company founder Mose Iacino developed a system for transporting fresh seafood to the landlocked state of Colorado. It entailed packing fresh fish in sawdust and ice, and shipping it by railcar from Seattle (hence the name Seattle Fish).
At each train stop, the ice was replenished to keep the seafood good and cold. The denizens of Denver were most thankful, flocking to his stall inside his uncle's downtown shop. Little did Mose Iacino know that he was launching a career that would last a lifetime and a family-owned seafood distribution company that would celebrate its 90th anniversary in 2008.
The management of Seattle Fish Company understands that the need to maintain the health of our planet and provide its customers with sustainably produced seafood go hand in hand. So, in addition to being longtime advocates of sustainable fishing and fish-farming principles, the company is now working to become a leader in sustainable business practices as well. With the recent formation of its "Green Team," Seattle Fish Company has opened a powerful new forum for innovative ideas and initiatives within its own operations, as well as within its worldwide network of suppliers. "We are committed to offering our customers new sources of seafood that are more sustainable. That means we actively work with new producers to help them find new markets for seafood that is produced more sustainably," says company COO Derek Figueroa.
In 2008, Seattle Fish Company became the only seafood distributor in Colorado to obtain Marine Stewardship Council's (MSC) traceability certification for sustainable seafood. Seattle Fish Company is also currently working toward ISO 14001 Certification, a series of approved guidelines for companies wishing to implement environmental management systems into their operations.
